From the 10-th to the 11-th of may on the Zayachy Island in St. Petersburg will be held a traditional smelt festival.

Small fish smelt can be caught in Neva river only in May. Its smell, similar to the smell of fresh cucumbers, is a symbol of spring. The smelt festival will take place on Zayachy Island for the sixth time. It is supposed that the festival will visit more than 100000 people.

Program of the festival includes cooking contest, photo contest «Petersburg - fishing town», rewarding of best fishermen, «Rain of smelt», «General's fish soup», «Sturgeon on spit», «Swimming Pool with live fish» and a few fish auctions.
