Aram Khachaturian's Spartacus debutTuesday's premiere of a new production of the classic ballet Spartacus at the Mikhailovsky Theater is an important event for cultural life in St. Petersburg. Every new version of Spartacus ballet is compared to the legendary original staging at the Mariinsky Theater by choreographer Leonid Yakobson in 1956. Yakobson created an experimental epic, depriving the dancers of points and tutus. It was a ballet in which the tunic-wearing heroes seemed, as if they were figures from ancient bas-reliefs come to life. The director of the ballet, Georgy Kovtun, is right to realize the risks of being compared to such legends as Yakobson and Grigorovich. With the support of Vladimir Kechman, general manager of the Mikhailovsky Theater, and Ruzimatov, who heads of the ballet troupe at the theater, Kovtun has finally brought his new Spartacus to the stage. The choreographer promises innovations in the art of dancing in the new production, which after its premiere on Tuesday will also be performed on Wednesday, on the 1-st, 15-th and 16-th of May. 2008.04.25 |
